How to fix the error 0x800CCC1A in Outlook 2007

One problem that can cause this error code in Outlook 2007 is a wrong port number for the outgoing (SMTP) server or for the POP incoming server, particularly, with SSL enabled on the wrong port number.

In Outlook 2007 you can choose between SSL and TLS for encrypting the connection with the outgoing (SMTP) server. SSL works on port number 465. Normally, TLS also works on 465, but here what's meant by TLS is STARTTLS, which works on port number 587. If, however, you have chosen SSL from the drop-down menu in the settings for the email account and you have set the port number to 587, you'll get the following error message when sending mail:

Task 'server_name.com-Sending' reported error (0x800CCC1A) : 'Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance.'

To solve this just change the port number to 465.

You'll also get the same error code (0x800CCC1A) when receiving mail with a POP incoming mail server, if you have enabled encryption but the port number is set to 110, which is the non-encryption port number. The whole error message is almost the same: that your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. The solution is to set the port number to 995, which is the encryption port number for POP.

Make sure that all the rest of the settings for the email account are correct and that there are no problems caused by your antivirus/firewall software scanning email messages.
