How to manage files and folders on your hosting account with the Pixie control panel

You can use the File Manager of the Pixie control panel to manage the files and directories on your HostKnox hosting account(s). To access it, log into the Pixie control panel, click on the Manage button for the site/account that you want to manage and on the next page select the Files section.

For a general overview of the Pixie control panel check out the tutorial on how to access and use the Pixie control panel or the corresponding shorter article version.

After you access the Files section of the control panel it will automatically show you the content of the public_html directory (the root web-accessible folder). To navigate to a subfolder simply click with the left mouse button on the name of the folder. To go one level up click on the folder with the two dots that's at the top of the list. If you click on the name of a file, this will display a new page with the content of the file. You can edit the content of the file. If you edit it, don't forget to click on the Save Contents or on the Save and Close button.

You can perform various other functions with the File Manager. In the black area on the right there are a few buttons that are displayed all the time: Create Directory, Create File, Upload, Fix Incorrect Permissions. To create a new directory or a new file, click respectively on the Create Directory or Create File button on the right. On the next page that opens automatically specify the name of the file/folder and save it. To upload a file, click on the Upload button, then on the page that opens click on the Browse button to find the file on your local computer and after that click on the Upload button to transfer it. The tool Fix Incorrect Permissions will automatically fix any world-writable permissions of the files and folders on your account.

The File Manager also has some additional functions. To use them, first you have to select/mark one or more files and/or folders. To do this, just click next to the name (not on the name itself) of the file or folder. To mark more than one item, press and hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard and then click with the left mouse button next to the name of each file/folder that you want to mark. After you mark a file/folder some additional buttons will appear in the black area on the right.

To rename the file/folder, click on the Rename button, on the following page type the new name in the text field and save the change. If the selected item is a file, a Download button will be available in the black area on the right. Click on it to download the file on your local computer. From the Pixie control panel you can only upload and download single files; you can't upload/download folders or more than one file at a time. Another of the buttons that appear in the black area on the right is Unpack; it will only be available if the selected file is an archive (e.g. a ZIP file). Click on it to unpack the archive. If you want to pack files and folders into an archive, first mark them and click on the Pack button on the right.

If you want to move the selected file(s) and/or folder(s) to a different directory, first mark the items, then click on the Copy or Cut button (depending on whether you want to keep or delete the source files/folders), navigate to the directory to which you want to move the items and click on the Paste here button. You can also delete files and folders. To do this, after you select them simply click on the Delete button on the right.

To change the permissions of the selected file/folder, click on the Permissions button, then on the following page select some of the preconfigured permissions from the drop-down menu and save the change. If the selected item is a directory, on the page with the permissions there will be a checkbox labeled Recursive. If you mark it the change will apply also to all the files and folders within the selected folder.
