How to create categories in PrestaShop

You can add new product categories from the backend (admin panel) of your PrestaShop.

After you log in, click on the Catalog tab. There you'll see listed all the current top level categories (subcategories of Home). With the sample data installed there should be three categories. To add a new category click on the Add a new category button. This will take you to the page where you have to configure the options for the new category. There you have to type the name of the new category. You can choose whether the category should be displayed on the frontend, you can select whether the category should be a top category or a subcategory of another category, and you can also write a short description. You can upload a logo image from your local computer by clicking on the Browse button.

The "meta" options are the next set of settings. They are not required, but if you wish, you can configure them. They are pretty much self-explanatory. One is for the title, the other for a short description of your category and the other for keywords. If you type more than one keyword, use commas to separate the words.

In the field for Friendly URL type the name of the category as you want it to be displayed in the URL address. Use hyphens to separate the words (e.g. computer-hardware). Search engine friendly URLs are disabled by default. To learn how to enable them read the article on enabling friendly URLs in PrestaShop.

From the last option (Customer group access), if you wish to, you can restrict the access to the category to a particular customer group.

Don't forget to click on the Save button to save the category.
